History
CORBIERES-MONTMIJA is the flagship of the collection « bio« of Domaines Auriol. Montmija is the name of the vineyard ribautois of Juliette and Jean Vialade, the family patriarch. Visionary of his time, Jean Vialade, president of the cooperative winery in Ribaute, made it the first European cooperative winery 100% organic 35 years ago. Montmija sign today declination varietals and vintages « bio« of our company. Montmija is the Occitan name which translates into French as « Le Mont Majeur » or « Le Mont du Milieu« , which is separated from the Montagne d‘Alaric by the River Orbieu.
Geography
The vineyard is located between the towns of Ribaute and Moux, all in Corbières. The main vineyard, Montmija is characterized by a soil of pure limestone which is the bedrock of the Corbières. The climate is typically Mediterranean.
Vineyard and conduct
These vineyards are Organically Grown and certified AB. The vines, Carignan and Grenache are pruned in goblet. The syrah is conducted on wire. The yield is 40 hectoliters per hectare maximum. Grapes purchased from neighboring properties correspond to the same characteristics.
Red varieties
This red wine is a blend of 45% Syrah, 25% Grenache, 25% Carignan and 5% Mourvèdre.
Wine-making and maturing
The “SIGNATURE” cuvee is a selection of the best plots of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan. The manual and mechanical harvest. Vinification is done with daily pump-overs (with temperature control). The maceration lasts 25 to 30 days. No oak. Carignan are vinified in carbonic maceration. Grenache and Syrah are destemmed.
Tasting and food-pairing
This wine is rich, elegant, concentrated, fruity and spicy. This complex wine, rather well-structured, gives away scents of the surrounding garrigue. Perfect throughout the meal, with grilled or stewed meat, poultry and game, as well as dark chocolate cakes and of course cheese.
